Holidays Increase Crashes: Be Prepared

It wouldn’t be a surprise to you if we say most accidents happen during this time of the year. With the hustle and bustle of holiday spirit – people are less aware on the road and thinking more on their countless responsibilities and their endless shopping lists. Keep in mind that during this time, holiday parties are blooming – which means more food and drinks!

It’s not new news when we say alcohol consumption is the number one reasons for car accidents. During the time of Christmas and New Years, the fatalities increase by 40% making it a hot spot for disaster. You wouldn’t want that during the season of giving and celebrating, would you? The numbers always change each year, however, the average of people who are victims of accidents are more than 300 – most leading to death. So what should you do to save yourself, a love one, and another driver/passenger on the road? Below are a few steps you can take to keep yourself out of a car accident.

  1. Check your car for maintenance: make sure your car is running well. With the weather changing, it can overheat your battery or your tires may not be updated. To avoid over-exhaustion or slippery areas, make sure to keep your car up-to-health.
  2. Watch your speed: Parties may be right after work – or the stores are closing and
  3. DO NOT DRINK OR DRIVE: this is the number one rule you should follow. We know holidays brings out delicious food and tasty drinks. We get it – it’s the time to be jolly. So let’s keep it jolly by having a designated driver take the wheel. No one wants to be upset during a time of celebration. So save a life by handing to keys to someone who is sober.

The last one is a biggy. Remember, there are alternative choices than getting in your own car. Take an Uber or a Lyft. Call up a friend to come to pick you up. Many people would rather hear a call to get a ride rather than on a hospital bed. Keep the spirit going by following these tips to keep the roads safe and your holiday spirit less like the Grinch.
