Monroe County Deputy Dies in Car Crash
Mon, Jun 28, 2010 | Auto Accident
Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Melissa Powers was killed in a car accident on Tuesday night. The accident occurred when Powers was heading northbound on US1 in Key Largo. At the time of the accident, Powers was on her way to check on an officer who could not be contacted on his radio. Powers, a 36 years old mother of two, was sent to the Mariner’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:30pm.
According to officials, it is believed that the officer who could not be contacted by police radio and was the reason why Deputy Powers was heading northbound on US1 had switched his radio to a different channel and was out of touch with dispatchers temporarily.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident that killed Powers and plans on releasing detail about the car accident sometime this week.
